Reading our catalogue

A catalogue should help you distinguish what is visible, what is documented and what still needs to be established.

One work, one reference

The object number connects photographs, descriptions and correspondence to the same work. Please use it when requesting information, so similar subjects or titles do not cause confusion.

Descriptions and attributions

A descriptive title states what the current record identifies. A specific attribution, date or origin requires supporting evidence. Qualifications such as “under review” should be read as an open question, not a confirmed claim.

Photographs and illustrations

Object photographs support the record of a particular work. Commission studies and interior illustrations are labelled separately. They show possible visual directions, not completed commissions, customer homes or additional stock.

Condition and provenance

Condition concerns the physical state of a work. Provenance concerns its known history of ownership. Neither should be inferred solely from style or appearance; missing records remain identified as such.

Availability and updates

A catalogue entry is not always an offer for sale. Each work shows its current status; works awaiting review cannot be purchased online. New photographs or information may lead to an updated description.

If a detail is unclear, include the object number in your enquiry.
