A guide to collecting

A useful starting point for looking at a work, asking the right questions and preparing for its arrival.

Start with the image

Spend time with the composition, then move closer to individual details. Use the gallery controls to compare photographs. Screen colour and a single photograph cannot fully describe the surface of a work.

Check the scale

Distinguish the painted area from the overall framed dimensions. Mark the full size on your wall and consider the viewing distance, nearby furniture and space needed for safe installation.

Read the description carefully

Look for the basis of a subject, date, maker or provenance statement. Descriptive titles help identify a record but are not authentication. Ask what supports a claim when the distinction matters to your decision.

Ask about condition

Review the available condition notes and request photographs of areas of concern. Ask about mounting and known repairs. A condition summary describes observations; it is not a guarantee that a work has no other issues.

Understand the full arrangement

Before agreeing to buy, confirm the artwork price, currency, packing, transport, insurance, taxes and return terms. Read the written acceptance process and check which responsibilities fall to the recipient.

Prepare the destination

Check access dimensions and arrange someone to receive the shipment. Retain packaging and photograph any visible damage. Keep the work away from avoidable exposure while suitable handling and installation are arranged.
